A poll has found that 51% of registered voters believe former President Donald Trump’s recent Constitution comments should disqualify him from holding office.
The new poll from Quinnipiac University put Trump’s disapproval rating at 59%, the highest since 2015, with 31% having a favorable opinion. Among Republican voters, however, he remains highly popular, with 70% having a favorable opinion. However, the poll also found that a slight majority of registered voters believe his apparent call to suspend the Constitution should suspend him from running altogether.
“Is it a ripple of doubt or a growing tidal wave of rejection? Former President Trump’s post presidential announcement numbers are heading in the wrong direction. You would have to go back at least six years to find less support for him from Republican, independent and American voters as a whole,” Quinnipiac University polling analyst Tim Malloy said.

Still, a clear majority of Republican voters in the Quinnipiac poll favored him as the Republican nominee above all others, with 56% answering in favor and 38% against. So, while the findings of the poll were mostly negative for Trump, the silver lining for him was the apparent contradiction of another recent poll that had Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis ahead as the favored Republican candidate in 2024 by double digits.
Trump’s Truth Social post that featured his remarks about the Constitution came in response to Twitter CEO Elon Musk releasing files detailing internal communications at the company about suppressing the Hunter Biden laptop story.
“A Massive Fraud of this type and magnitude allows for the termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution,” Trump wrote in the post.
He later walked back these comments, saying the media was mischaracterizing what he said.

“The Fake News is actually trying to convince the American People that I said I wanted to ‘terminate’ the Constitution. This is simply more DISINFORMATION & LIES, just like RUSSIA, RUSSIA, RUSSIA, and all of their other HOAXES & SCAMS,” Trump wrote. “What I said was that when there is ‘MASSIVE & WIDESPREAD FRAUD & DECEPTION,’ as has been irrefutably proven in the 2020 Presidential Election, steps must be immediately taken to RIGHT THE WRONG. Only FOOLS would disagree with that and accept STOLEN ELECTIONS. MAGA!”
