RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Steven Benjamin of Richmond is the new president of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.

Benjamin was sworn in at the organization’s meeting Saturday in San Francisco.

An attorney in private practice, Benjamin serves as counsel to the state Senate Courts of Justice Committee. He also is a member of the Virginia Board of Forensic Science and the Virginia Indigent Defense Commission.

Benjamin said one of his goals as NACDL president will be training the defense bar and collaboration with experts in the use of forensic science. He also will focus on preserving the right to be free from unreasonable searches and surveillance, and strengthening the Six Amendment promise of counsel for all accused.
