‘Dangerous’ Georgia murder suspect flees custody after ‘door malfunction’

Authorities are searching for a “dangerous” detainee who escaped from police custody in Georgia.

Kevin David Lenix Wilson, 32, escaped Effingham County Jail on Monday after 8 p.m. Sheriff Jimmy McDuffie says that the escape happened because of a technical malfunction caused by recent storms and human error.

Law enforcement was not aware that Wilson was missing until Tuesday morning, McDuffie said. Law enforcement did not inform the public of Wilson’s escape until 4 p.m. Tuesday, claiming that they did not want to tip Wilson off that they were aware of his escape. The sheriff also claims that he used that time to contact the U.S. Marshal’s Office.

A K-9 unit was called to the area in an attempt to pick up Wilson’s scent, reports WJCL. Bloodhounds allegedly picked up Wilson’s scent and tracked him but lost the trail near the jail. This led officials to suspect that Wilson had an accomplice pick him up.

Rincon Police were holding Wilson in connection to an incident on Oct. 25, 2020, where he was charged with willful obstruction, possession of a firearm or knife during the commission of or attempt to commit certain felonies, receipt, possession, or transfer of firearm by a convicted felon, marijuana possession less than 1 ounce, drug trafficking, reckless driving, fleeing or attempting to elude police, weaving over the roadway and speeding, according to jail records.

A grand jury indicted Wilson for three counts of malice murder, one count of felony murder, aggravated assault, armed robbery, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in connection to a May 2020 homicide in Savannah.
