Chris Christie: Trump’s decision on 2024 presidential race won’t affect mine

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie could run for president in 2024, and he’s willing to fight against former President Donald Trump if necessary.

Christie, who lost the 2016 presidential nomination to Trump, said the former president’s decision on whether to run a third time will not affect his choice.

Christie is “not going to defer to anyone” should he decide to run, he said during a Ruthless podcast appearance Tuesday.

“And I’m also not going to be one of these people who’s going to say, ‘Well, I’ll wait to see what President Trump’s going to do.’ You know, I’m not going to defer to anyone if I decide that it’s what I want to do and that I think I’m the best option for the party and for the country,” Christie said.

Deferring to someone demonstrates “weakness and indecision,” he added.

Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley would not enter the race if Trump decides to run, she previously said.

“I would not run if President Trump ran,” Haley told reporters on April 12. “And I would talk to him about it. You know, that’s something that we will have a conversation about at some point if that decision is something that has to be made.”

Christie has previously teased the possibility that he could run for the Republican nomination in 2024, as has Trump.
