First lady says she and Biden haven’t talked about running in 2024

First lady Jill Biden indicated Tuesday that she and President Joe Biden have not held a family discussion about him seeking a second term in the White House but thinks he should run anyway.

“Not yet — we’ve been a little bit too busy,” she told NBC’s Sheinelle Jones. “Not yet, but I’m sure it’ll be a discussion.”

“You know, it is taxing,” the first lady added of the rigors of office. “But look at all Joe has done. He has kept true to what he said he would do, and so I think he just needs to keep going.”

Biden and top White House officials have remained adamant that the president will seek a second term, yet a growing number of Democratic lawmakers have cast doubt about the president’s ability to win reelection in recent weeks.

Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH), amid a difficult Senate race in contested Ohio, told reporters last week that his “hunch” is that both Democrats and Republicans “need new leadership across the board.”

“I think it’s time for a generational move,” he continued. “The president said from the very beginning he was going to be a bridge to the next generation, which is basically what I was saying.”

“The president has been very clear that he intends to run again,” Vice President Kamala Harris said somewhat more definitively on Sunday. “And if he does, I will be running with him proudly.”
