Rep. Frederica Wilson: ‘White men’ use detention facilities as a ‘money making scheme’

Rep. Frederica Wilson said the people running migrant detention facilities are all white and try to take in as many migrants as possible in order to make more money.

CNN anchor Alisyn Camerota asked the Florida Democrat if the facilities make their money by keeping the migrants out of public view.

“I think it’s a money making scheme. Instead of them processing the children out, they’re processing children in. So that they can use a government money to expand this facility, which is already the about the size of three football fields, with thousands of children,” Wilson said.

“And every day they’re bringing in new children from the border. So there’s no real plan to exit these children out of this facility, but there’s a real plan to bring them there because they said to us, ‘We’re going to add permanent structures.’ Now they’re in tents. And it is so sad,” she continued.

Wilson said she noticed the people working at the facility she visited, the Homestead Temporary Shelter for Unaccompanied Children in Homestead, Florida, were all white men. “No Hispanic men, no Hispanic women. Everyone running this institution are white men,” she said.

Wilson recently made headlines for wanting prosecute people who either make fun of or threaten members of Congress on the internet. She was responding to a recent report that publicized posts made by Border Patrol agents in a private Facebook group that made fun of migrants and some members of Congress, including Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
