Two California Republicans defeated their Democratic challengers on Monday, moving the GOP closer to controlling the House.
Incumbent GOP Reps. Ken Calvert and Michelle Steel fended off their Democratic challengers, keeping California’s 41st and 45th congressional districts in Republican control.

Calvert won reelection to the House for California’s 41st District.
The incumbent faced Democrat Will Rollins in the Nov. 8 midterm elections. With 80% of the votes in, Calvert had a 5,500-vote lead over Rollins, the Associated Press reported.
Calvert was first elected to the House in 1992 and serves as dean of the California Republican delegation.
Steel defeated Democrat Jay Chen to serve California’s 45th District. With 69% of the votes counted as of Monday night, Steel had 53.8% to Chen’s 46.2%, the Associated Press reported.
“I am humbled to continue to fight for this community in Congress,” Steele tweeted, thanking the voters in her district. “Thank you to the voters of #CA45 for putting your trust in me. Let’s get to work.”

Steele was first elected in 2020, defeating Democrat Harley Rouda. She serves on the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure and the Committee on Education and Labor.
Nearly a week after Election Day, 10 House races are still outstanding in California.

The tightest race remaining in California is for the open seat in the 13th District, where Democrat Adam Gray has a 761-vote lead over Republican John Duarte with nearly 80% of the votes counted, according to the Associated Press.
To control the House, Republicans need 218 seats. They hold 217, with Democrats holding 205.
