Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s son sentenced for stabbing neighbor

The son of basketball legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was sentenced to six months in jail Tuesday after accepting a plea deal in connection to a charge of stabbing a neighbor.

Adam Abdul-Jabbar, 29, pleaded guilty to three counts of assault with a deadly weapon, along with one count of carrying a dirk or a dagger, according to court documents reviewed by multiple outlets. His six-month sentence was too light after stabbing the neighbor “so violently,” according to District Attorney Todd Spitzer.

“This slap on the wrist is an absolute miscarriage of justice,” Spitzer said in a statement posted to Facebook.

Abdul-Jabbar stabbed his 60-year-old neighbor in the back of his head after having an altercation over trash cans, court documents say. The neighbor had confronted Abdul-Jabbar about his failure to take in the trash cans for his elderly roommate, according to prosecutors.

“This man nearly bled to death in front of the emergency room doors after being stabbed so violently over and over that his skull was fractured,” Spitzer said.

As a result of the stay, which Orange County Superior Court Judge Derek Johnson offered to Abdul-Jabbar as part of the plea deal, the retired basketball star’s son is able to petition for home confinement instead of imprisonment, according to the outlet.

Spitzer’s office “vehemently objected” to this possibility, saying Abdul-Jabbar showed a “complete disregard” for human life by stabbing another person over an argument about trash cans.

Abdul-Jabbar’s father, a Hall of Famer and six-time National Basketball Association Most Valuable Player, has made headlines in recent weeks as a vocal proponent of the NBA issuing a vaccine mandate for players, stating players who refuse to be vaccinated put others at risk.

The Washington Examiner reached out to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office for a statement but did not receive a response.
