House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that Democrats will send the Senate the articles of impeachment against President Trump on Wednesday.
Pelosi, a California Democrat, said the House will vote Wednesday to appoint a list of lawmakers who will serve as impeachment managers in the upcoming Senate trial.
“The American people deserve the truth, and the Constitution demands a trial,” Pelosi said in a statement Tuesday. “The House will now proceed with a vote on transmitting the articles of impeachment and naming impeachment managers on Wednesday, Jan. 15. The president and the senators will be held accountable.”
The House passed two articles of impeachment on Dec. 19 without the support of a single GOP Republican. Pelosi held onto the articles to try to force the Senate GOP to agree to call certain Trump administration officials to testify at the Senate trial.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, has rejected the request for a pretrial witness agreement.
A Senate trial is expected to begin next week.
