The Academy Award nominations were announced, and some critics are upset that no women were nominated for best director.
After announcing the nominations, host Issa Rae offered “congratulations to those men” who had been nominated. The comment drew reaction from people online who described it as “shade.”

Greta Gerwig, who directed Little Women, was the top choice among many critics, who thought a woman deserved to be nominated for Best Director. Little Women was nominated for Best Picture.
How can Little Women get Best Pic, Actress, Adapted Screenplay and Supporting Actress but not Best Director?! #Oscars2020

No Greta Gerwig for ‘Little Women,’ no Lulu Wang for ‘The Farewell,’ no Lorene Scafaria for ‘Hustlers,’ no Melina Matsoukas for ‘Queen & Slim’ no Marielle Heller for ‘A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.’ Once again, the Oscars nominated five men for best director. #OscarNoms
