‘Substantial international ties’: Judge denies Ghislaine Maxwell’s third bail request

A federal judge ruled against Ghislaine Maxwells third attempt for bail Monday.

Maxwell’s latest proposition, giving up her French and British citizenship, among other things, would not change U.S. District Judge Alison Nathan’s assessment that the British socialite with ties to the late pedophile Jeffrey Epstein is a flight risk.

Maxwell “poses a risk of flight and that there are no combination of conditions that can reasonably assure her appearance,” and noted that she “continues to have substantial international ties, familial and personal connections abroad, substantial financial resources, and experience evading detection,” the judge said, according to the Washington Post.

Another part of the proposed plan for Maxwell’s release was that a chunk of the $22.5 million estate belonging to Maxwell and her husband go into a special account to be overseen by an “asset manager.”

Maxwell was arrested in July 2020 and is charged with conspiring with Epstein to recruit, groom, and sexually abuse underage girls, as well as perjury in depositions regarding Epstein. The British socialite said she “vigorously denies the charges” and pleaded not guilty.

Her first attempt at making bail occurred after she was arrested initially, and the second effort took place in December 2020 when she tried to post a $28.5 million with the assistance of “a handful of close family and friends” but was subsequently rejected by the Manhattan Federal Court.

Her lawyer wrote a complaint in February alleging that a Metropolitan Detention Center guard physically abused her and that she was retaliated against for reporting the alleged incident.

Maxwell’s trial is set for the summer.

Epstein was arrested in July 2019 on federal sex-trafficking and conspiracy charges for allegedly abusing girls as young as 14. He was found dead in his Manhattan prison cell that August, in what was determined to be a suicide, according to the New York City medical examiner.
