A significant piece of Marvel Comics history has gone web-slinging into the record book.
A single black and white page of a 1984 comic book that showed Spider-Man in his black costume for the first time sold for $3.36 million at auction on Thursday in Dallas, Texas, becoming the most expensive single comic book page ever sold at auction.
“We could not be happier, especially for our consignor, who bought the art in the late 1980s and treasured these pages ever since,” Joe Mannarino, New York director of comics and comic art for Heritage Auctions, said in a press statement. “Today’s results prove what we’ve long been saying: Comic book art is as beloved and valuable as anything put on canvas.”

The page, which comes from 1984’s Secret Wars No. 8, features the storyline where Spider-Man attaches to an alien symbiote, creating his black Spider-Man suit. Spidey later splits from the alien suit at the end of the Secret Wars arc, allowing the parasite to find a new host, Eddie Brock, and become the classic Spider-Man villain Venom.
Another page from that same comic was purchased for $288,000 at Thursday’s auction, significantly less than the black-suited Spidey. Heritage did not disclose the identity of the purchasers at the auction.

The auction also sold a copy of Action Comics No. 1, considered the first appearance of Superman, for $3.18 million. This issue has been hotly contested and highly desired by comic fans.
Other copies of Action Comics No. 1 have sold for similarly high prices in the past. One copy was acquired by a private investor in April of last year for $3.25 million, while another version sold for $3.2 million in August 2014.
