Texas teenager wins historic National Spelling Bee — could you get the winning words?

Fourteen-year-old Harini Logan made history Thursday after she won the 2022 Scripps National Spelling Bee in the competition’s first-ever spell-off.

The Texas native defeated Vikram Raju, 12, in the spell-off, a competition format in which whoever can spell the most words correctly in 90 seconds wins.

Logan got 22 correct, and Raju spelled 15 correctly, according to a report.

Logan’s words included saccharose, vesicate, ornithorhynchus, and moorhen.

“I think honestly so surreal, it’s my fourth time at the Bee,” Logan said. “This is such a dream, this is my fourth bee, and I’m just so overwhelmed.”

Logan said she had to calm down during the spell-off.

“At first, I was a little uneasy, and I decided to take it in stride,” she said. “I just had to take a deep breath and tell myself to go out there and do my best and whatever happens, happens.”
