North Carolina governor Pat McCrory conceded defeat Monday in his reelection battle against Democrat Roy Cooper, bringing a razor-thin contest that had been extended by a recount process to a close.
“Despite continued questions that should be answered regarding the voting process, I personally believe that the majority of our citizens have spoken. And we now should do everything we can to support the 75th governor of North Carolina, Roy Cooper,” McCrory said in a taped statement.
Cooper had led McCrory, the Republican incumbent, by a bit more than 10,000 votes from 4.7 million cast. A recount of heavily Democratic Durham County began during the weekend, but partial returns through Sunday showed little change in the results.
