Scoop: Inside the Hudson family tragedy, aftermath

The killings of Jennifer Hudson’s mother, brother, and nephew may have been triggered by a birthday gift that set off a jealous rage.

According to People, police said the suspect, William Balfour, arrived at estranged wife Julia Hudson’s home the day after she celebrated her birthday, and was angry to see a present he thought another man had given her.

The suspect is then thought to have returned after Julia, Jennifer’s sister, had gone to work, shooting Darnell Donerson and Jason Hudson. He also allegedly abducted Julian King, 7, before killing the boy.

A lawyer representing the accused man said he’s simply a target of suspicion due to his troubled relationship with Julia. However, an Illnois assistant state attorney said the gunpowder residue found in Balfour’s car “is indicative that he fired a handgun. So, yes, indeed, there is physical evidence.”

Meanwhile, after her label, J Records, announced last week that Jennifer would film her new video — originally scheduled before the killings — the shoot has reportedly been canceled.

“The video was set up before the tragedy and she felt like she should finish what she started, but she’s realized that she’s not ready to go back to work,” a source relayed to Us. “It’s too early.”

A rep for Jennifer countered that the record label’s announcement of the shoot was “speculation,” explaining that “the video shoot was never confirmed, so there was nothing to cancel. [J Records’ statement] was erroneous.”

Well, no doubt nobody would blame Jennifer if it were true. Give the woman all the time she needs to heal.

Meester a Mrs.?

Once again, life is imitating art as the cast of “Gossip Girl” generates more juicy gossip worthy of the high school set. The latest: Page Six claims that star Leighton Meester has secretly announced her engagement to a minor player — on Facebook, natch.

The starlet, claims the column, has been dating actor Sebastian Stan since his brief stint on the show shortly after it debuted last year. A source says they are betrothed and have revealed the info on their “secret” Facebook pages.

A rep had no comment. Well, did anyone think to check whether she confirmed the news on her secret Facebook page?
