Cpl. Michael Kane, an eight-year veteran of the Prince George’s County police, was placed on administrative leave Friday after a midmorning incident in which he shot and wounded an 18-year-old man in Capitol Heights, according to county police.
Police gave the following account:
The incident began at 11 a.m., when officers were flagged down by a business owner in the 4900 block of Marlboro Pike and told two people were trying to steal a go-kart from his lot.
The officers chased the fleeing suspects down nearby Hybrid Avenue, where they found the two suspects trying to enter a Honda Accord with two people already inside.
The officers tried to remove all occupants from the car, and one of the officers struggled with a suspect attempting to flee.
The suspect did not obey Cpl. Kane’s demand to see the man’s hands and instead reached for a loaded Ruger 9mm semiautomatic handgun tucked into his waistband. Kane fired his weapon and hit the man once in his hip.
Two suspects fled the scene, one in a blue Cadillac. The remaining suspects were arrested, police said, and charges are pending. The man who was shot was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Cpl. Kane was treated for a knee injury.
