A Howard County teenager died Monday afternoon after slamming into a tree while sledding down a steep, 1,000-foot long hill, authorities said.

Ryan Conley, 16, was sledding with his sister on his family’s farm in Lisbon when he struck a tree and caromed into a nearby ravine, said Bill Mould, a spokesman for Howard County Fire and Safety.

Paramedics used ropes and pulleys to retrieve him. He was airlifted to University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center and died Monday afternoon shortly after arriving, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
