Feminist activist Gloria Steinem said New York Mayor Bill de Blasio is the “only male” candidate on her shortlist of preferred presidential candidates.
“Mayor de Blasio is among my top four choices for president and the only male human being on that list,” Steinem said Tuesday at a news conference where she endorsed the mayor’s plan to require businesses to give employees two weeks of paid vacation.
Steinem did not say who the other three candidates are, though six women are running for the Democratic nomination: Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii, and author Marianne Williamson.
The activist backed Christine Quinn over de Blasio during the 2013 mayoral race. Since then, de Blasio has appointed her an honorary commissioner of his commission on gender equity.
De Blasio, 58, entered the 2020 race for president earlier this month, becoming the 23rd Democrat to join the crowded field.
