Toby Keith’s music back on charts in wake of iconic singer’s death

The late Toby Keith’s music is still making waves, as several of his songs have made their way back to the charts following his death.

Keith, who died on Feb. 5 following a yearslong battle with stomach cancer, was the country musician who wrote “Don’t Let The Old Man In,” which became last week’s bestselling song with 27,000 purchases. It also reached the No. 2 spot on Billboard’s music popularity ranking and was one of his nine songs in Billboard’s top 25.

The other eight songs that made the ranking were “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” at No. 7, “Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue” at No. 8, “How Do You Like Me Now?!” at No. 12, “As Good As I Once Was” at No. 13, “Beer for My Horses,” featuring Willie Nelson, at No. 18, “I Love This Bar” at No. 19, and “American Soldier” at No. 23.

Last week also saw Keith’s 35 Greatest Hits album, released in 2008, become the most purchased album across all genres. It marked the fifth time one of his albums has achieved such an accomplishment and the first since the 2010 release of Bullets in the Gun.

Keith’s death was announced on social media in the early hours of Feb. 6. The musician fought his battle with stomach cancer “with grace and courage,” according to a statement. In June 2022, Keith announced his diagnosis on X, saying he had received it in the previous fall.

A few months before his death, Keith credited his faith for getting him through his health battle, calling it his “rock.”

“I lean on my faith, and I just pray and lean into it,” Keith said. “You’ve got to do what you’ve got to do, and I don’t know how people do it without faith. … That’s what I did. It was my rock.”

Keith’s final concert was in December 2023 in Las Vegas.
