Oklahoma Attorney General Mike Hunter is resigning his position due to concerns that “certain personal matters that are becoming public will become a distraction for this office.”
The attorney general did not elaborate on which “personal matters” may become public, but his resignation comes one day after the Oklahoman submitted questions to Hunter about an affair with a state employee who did not work in his office, people familiar with the situation told the outlet. Last week, Hunter filed for divorce from his wife.

“The office of the attorney general is one of the most important positions in state government. I cannot allow a personal issue to overshadow the vital work the attorneys, agents and support staff do on behalf of Oklahomans,” Hunter’s resignation statement said.
An Oklahoma native, Hunter was appointed secretary of state from 1999 to 2002 under Gov. Frank Keating and then again under Gov. Mary Fallin. He was appointed to his post of attorney general in 2017, replacing Scott Pruitt, who left to join the Trump administration. In 2018, Hunter was elected to a full term as attorney general.
Hunter has been married to Cheryl Plaxico Hunter, also an attorney, for 35 years, and they have two sons, Barrett and Brock.
