A majority of voters reported having low confidence in the state of the U.S. government, with more than half saying they think democracy in the country is not working very well.
About 52% of voters said they believe democracy was working either “not too well” or “not at all,” compared to only 37% who said it functions “somewhat well,” according to a new poll from the Associated Press and NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Only 9% said democracy is working “extremely or very well.”

The numbers were largely split along party lines, with Republicans being more likely than Democrats to say they believe democracy is not working well. The share of Democrats who said democracy is working well has increased from 6% to 15% since 2020, while the number of Republicans has declined from 23% to 5%, the poll showed.
The latest numbers come just three weeks before the midterm elections, with less than half of voters, 47%, reporting confidence votes will be counted accurately, according to the poll. Those numbers were also split along party lines, with Democrats far more likely to express faith in the vote count compared to Republicans, 74% to 25%.

Majorities in both parties reported negative outlooks on how the country chooses its leaders, with only 30% of Democrats and 24% of Republicans favoring the current election system, the poll showed. Nearly 40% said they consider voter suppression to be a major problem, with another 35% citing voter fraud as a major problem.
The poll surveyed 1,121 voters nationwide between Oct. 6-10 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.8 percentage points.
