Escalating violence in Israel is ‘unacceptable and must be condemned,’ White House says

The Biden administration condemned on Monday the recent violence at Palestinian religious sites and subsequent explosive attacks launched from Gaza toward targets in Israel.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters at Monday’s briefing that the administration is “continuing to closely monitor the violence in Israel” and added that “the president is kept abreast and is watching this closely as well.”

“We have serious concerns about the situation, including violent confrontations that we’ve seen over the last few days,” Psaki noted. “In a call over the weekend with his Israeli counterpart, our national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, reiterated concerns about the potential evictions of Palestinian families from their homes, and they agreed that the launching of rocket attacks and attending incendiary balloons from Gaza towards Israel is unacceptable and must be condemned.”

Violent clashes at the al Aqsa mosque over the weekend resulted in serious injuries for hundreds of Palestinian citizens and Israeli police officers.

Hamas responded to the weekend’s unrest by launching dozens of rockets at Israeli targets on Monday.

Notably, the White House’s top spokeswoman did not blame either side for the recent days’ violence. Some GOP lawmakers, however, including possible 2024 presidential candidates such as Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, have said the White House already has taken the Palestinians’ side.
