An investigation into the child’s death began shortly after 3:00 p.m., according to a report.

The deadly hot car incident started when the mother went to a store with her son and 8-year-old daughter to prepare for the daughter’s birthday party, authorities said.
The mother and daughter got out of the vehicle, but in their rush, the young boy was left strapped to his seat, the report noted.
After nearly three hours, the mother realized her son was still in the car when she called for him, but he never came, authorities said.
The car the child was trapped in was a loaner, according to the report.
A safety lock might have played a key factor in the child’s inability to exit the vehicle, according to Gonzalez.
