The man who authorities believe killed a Wisconsin judge on Friday, and is behind a long hit list of political and judicial targets, died in the hospital on Tuesday from self-inflicted gunshot wounds, a state official said.
The death of Douglas Uhde, 56, who allegedly killed former Juneau County Circuit Court Judge John Roemer, was confirmed by Wisconsin Department of Justice spokeswoman Gillian Drummond, according to the Associated Press. Uhde was declared brain-dead on Saturday but was kept on life support for organ donations.

Police officers in New Lisbon, Wisconsin, responded to a call from someone who fled Roemer’s house after hearing two shots fired last week. When officers arrived, negotiators attempted to talk to someone inside the house. When the negotiations did not work, the officers went into the house at 10:17 a.m. and found Roemer zip-tied to a chair with a fatal gunshot to his chest. In the basement, they discovered Uhde with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul.
Uhde also had a hit list of high-profile targets in his truck, officials said, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers, and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
“The information that’s been gathered indicated that it was a targeted act and that the targeting was based on some sort of court case or court cases,” Kaul said on Friday before adding that all the targets had been notified of Uhde’s list, but officials did not believe there was an active threat.

Uhde had a criminal and prison record dating back 20 years, the outlet reported. Roemer, who retired from the bench in 2017, appeared on the list after the judge gave Uhde a six-year prison sentence on weapon charges. Uhde’s release from his most recent sentence was in April 2020.
