Liz Cheney (R-WY) warned that the outcome of Arizona’s secretary of state and governor elections could pose a risk to democracy while speaking at an international leadership event at the McCain Institute.
Cheney, who is one of two Republicans on the House committee investigating the events of Jan. 6, 2021, is a prominent critic of former President Donald Trump. She lost her primary to Harriet Hageman, a Trump-backed candidate, in August.
The Wyoming representative has been vocal against those who believe the 2020 election was stolen, such as Kari Lake, who is running to become governor of Arizona and is a Trump supporter.
At the McCain Institute event at Arizona State University, Cheney called out Lake and Mark Finchem, the Republican candidate for secretary of state, for repeatedly peddling false claims about election interference in 2020.
“If you care about our democracy and you care about the survival of our republic, then … we cannot give people power who have told us that they will not honor elections,” Cheney said, according to Axios.

Lake said last week that if Cheney decides to leave the Republican Party, something Cheney vowed to do if Trump is the GOP’s 2024 nominee for president, it would be a “gift.”
In response to Cheney’s comments, Finchem told Axios that Cheney had “zero credibility.”
“In fact, she was fired by her constituents because of her failure to recognize reality,” Finchem said, referring to Cheney’s loss to Hageman.
Cheney also applauded Arizona’s Maricopa County supervisor Bill Gates and recorder Stephen Richer for their work defending the 2020 election results, calling them “courageous Republicans.”
Trump and his allies called out Maricopa County for election fraud in 2020. A review of the votes certified President Joe Biden’s win in the county.
Lake and Finchem, unhappy with the results, filed a lawsuit in April against the county to prevent it from using certain equipment for the midterm elections.

The county’s Board of Supervisors filed a motion for sanctions in August, urging the court to administer penalties against the GOP candidates for a “frivolous lawsuit.”
