The party’s over at all of Airbnb‘s locations around the world, the company said Tuesday, two years after a pandemic-era ban was implemented.

The permanent ban includes both the “party houses” and the open-invite parties that were banned in 2020 to comply with social distancing guidelines during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The temporary ban has proved effective, and today we are officially codifying the ban as our policy,” the company said in a blog post. “Over time, the party ban became much more than a public health measure. It developed into a bedrock community policy to support our Hosts and their neighbors.”

Since the ban was implemented in August 2020, Airbnb has seen a 44% year-over-year drop in the rate of party reports.

The company initiated its first party ban in 2019 after five people were fatally shot at one of its locations in California. But the ban became more widespread, eventually encompassing all of its locations in 2020 after the COVID-19 pandemic hit.

Hosts or guests who violate the ban can face account suspension or full removal from the platform, according to the post. The company said it would continue enforcing the ban through anti-party measures that include a 24-hour safety line and the Neighborhood Support Line, which allows neighbors to share information on rule-breaking directly with the platform.

In 2021, over 6,600 guests were suspended from Airbnb for attempting to violate the ban, according to the post.

Although many changes have been permanent, the company said it would ease some pandemic-era restrictions, such as removing the 16-person limit on larger homes in European castles, villas, and vineyards within the United States.
