Conservative radio host Larry Elder threw his support behind the recall effort against Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA), blasting the Democrat for passing “job-killing bills.”
Elder said even if Rescue California, a conservative activist group, fails to obtain the required 1.38 million signatures by May to put the measure on the November ballot, the recall effort will shed light on Newsom’s policies.
“It will point out to people in the other 49 states — about the crime, about the homelessness, about how he’d taken a surplus and made it to a deficit, about the number of people who are leaving California, and about the job-killing bills he signed,” Elder said on Forbes Newsroom.
“Recently, he just signed a bill to raise the minimum wage for some workers to $50 an hour, effective in April. As soon as that bill was signed, Pizza Hut laid off 1,200 truck drivers en masse,” Elder said.
Newsom signed a law increasing the minimum wage for California-based fast food workers at chains with 60 or more locations nationwide to $20 an hour, taking effect in April. The minimum wage in California overall stands at $16 an hour, up from $15.50 last year. As restaurants across the state brace for change, Pizza Hut said 1,200 delivery drivers will face layoffs this year, transitioning to third-party services such as DoorDash, GrubHub, and Uber Eats to deliver its food.

“That’s the downside to some of these job-killing bills that people like Gavin Newsom, who’s to the left of Joe Biden, is doing to our state,” Elder said. “So, if the recall does nothing else but shed light on all of this, then to me, it might very well have been worth the effort.”
Rescue California is the same group that attempted to recall Newsom in 2021, which voters overwhelmingly rejected, and the Democratic governor sailed through reelection the next year. Elder lost his Republican bid in the California recall election of Newsom. He launched a 2024 presidential bid before dropping out and endorsing former President Donald Trump.
