Don’t bet on Mitt Romney, the junior senator for Utah, endorsing President Trump in 2020.

The 2012 Republican presidential nominee said Friday he may skip endorsing any candidate in the 2020 presidential race. “I don’t think endorsements are worth a thimble of spit,” he said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if I stay out of the endorsements.”

Romney, 72, who courted Trump during his own presidential bid in and in his 2017 Senate campaign, wrote in the name of his wife, Ann, on his 2016 ballot. “I still think she’s doing a fine job,” he joked Tuesday.

Romney spoke to reporters during a break at the E2 Summit, which he started in 2012. The annual gathering on politics and policy in Park City, Utah, draws politicians along with wealthy business people and donors.

Romney has, at times, been one of the most outspoken Republican critics of the president. At others, he has praised Trump and in late 2016 he actively sought to become his Secretary of State.

Earlier this week, he gave a speech assailing Trump’s foreign policy and he has recently begun to style himself as the heir to John McCain, the late Arizona senator who was often a thorn in Trump’s side.
