President Donald Trump will not impose tariffs on Mexico for at least a month as the two sides negotiate how Mexico can do more to counter illegal immigration and drug trafficking at the border.
Trump announced that Mexico agreed to new terms after a “friendly” conversation on Monday with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.
“She agreed to immediately supply 10,000 Mexican Soldiers on the Border separating Mexico and the United States,” the president wrote on social media. “These soldiers will be specifically designated to stop the flow of fentanyl, and illegal migrants into our Country.”
According to Trump, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick will lead the discussions.
“I look forward to participating in those negotiations with President Sheinbaum as we attempt to achieve a ‘deal’ between our two countries,” he added.
In her own social media post, Sheinbaum confirmed Mexico would deploy 10,000 National Guard service members to the border and that the U.S. would do more to stop the flow of illegal weapons into Mexico.
It is unclear whether those troops are different from the same number agreed to under President Joe Biden‘s administration in 2021.
Trump’s 25% tariffs against Mexico were set to be imposed early Tuesday morning after he signed three executive orders last weekend.
Trump’s talks with Canada, which also faces tariffs, are ongoing after the president spoke with outgoing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday morning. Another call is scheduled between the pair on Monday afternoon. Duties on Canadian goods are poised to be 25% as well, though with lower 10% levies on energy resources.
Trudeau told reporters last weekend that if Trump’s tariffs on Canada go into effect, his country would respond in kind with its own 25% duties on $155 billion worth of imported U.S. products.
Trump has simultaneously threatened 10% tariffs on China.

Trump and his aides, including Vice President JD Vance, have embraced the news regarding Mexico.
“For three days, a lot of the far left has actively rooted against America and argued we’d get nothing out of President Trunp’s [sic] demands that Mexico secure its country. Well, how do you like them apples?” he wrote on social media.
