Quinn: Same sex marriage is ‘right’ for Illinois

CHICAGO (AP) — Gov. Pat Quinn says approving same sex marriage for Illinois was the “right thing to do” and he didn’t need to go to the voters to figure that out.

The Chicago Democrat spoke to reporters Monday after one longtime couple took their vows at a Chicago museum. The comments were a dig at Quinn’s Republican challenger Bruce Rauner (ROW’-ner).

Rauner hasn’t detailed his views on gay marriage, but has said voters should have decided the matter.

The state’s new law allowing same-sex marriage took effect Sunday, but many county clerk offices remained closed. That made Monday the official first day for many.

Quinn declined to answer questions about the state budget, saying it was a day to celebrate marriage. Lawmakers approved a $35.7 billion budget last week.
