Johnson resigning from Pr. George’s County Council

Prince George’s County Councilwoman Leslie Johnson will step down from her office on July 31, according to her attorney.

Johnson submitted her resignation letter to Council Chairwoman Ingrid Turner on Tuesday morning, said Johnson attorney Shawn Wright. Her resignation will take effect the final day before the council’s August recess.

The Mitchellville Democrat pleaded guilty Thursday to conspiracy to commit federal witness- and evidence-tampering charges, including stuffing $79,600 in cash down her bra and flushing a $100,000 check on the instructions of her husband, then County Executive Jack Johnson.

“My resignation is important for the constituents of District 6 so that the district can be in the best possible position to continue to move forward,” Johnson said in a statement. “I again apologize for my mistake and I’m deeply honored to have had the opportunity to serve the residents of District 6.”
