Bill would ban stoplight texting

Texting while stopped at a traffic light soon could be illegal in Maryland, if lawmakers approve legislation that would expand the state’s texting-while-driving ban.

Two state senators and three delegates are backing the legislation, which would prohibit drivers from texting while in a “main roadway,” regardless of whether their vehicle is in motion. The bill would require drivers to pull over to the shoulder if they want to text.

The bill also would ban drivers from reading texts while driving — an act excluded from the state’s texting-while-driving ban. The Senate’s Judicial Proceedings Committee has scheduled a hearing on the bill for Tuesday.
