The death of a homeless man who was attacked last month in Annapolis has been ruled the city?s fifth homicide since January, Annapolis police said Wednesday.
Russell Locket III, 53, told police March 15 that someone knocked him down and went through his pockets around 8 o?clock the previous night on West Street.
Lockett was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore City with a broken rib and punctured lung, police said.
He died about 8:15 a.m. two days later, police said.
A medical examiner ruled the cause of death as pneumonia aggravated by blunt force trauma, police said.
“He didn?t tell anybody or seekany help,” said Hal Dalton, police spokesman.
Lockett walked with his injuries for about five miles after the attack to a homeless camp in the woods behind a bank on Bestgate Road, police said.
“Sometime during the next day he got to feeling so poorly that he went into the bank and asked them to call for help,” Dalton said.
Lockett?s brother, who lives in Edgewater, was notified of the death and told police that Lockett had been homeless for about a year and spent some time at the Light House Shelter in Annapolis, police said.
Lockett was unable to provide a description of his attacker, because he was hit from behind, Dalton said.
Police canvassed the area the day Lockett reported the crime, but couldn?t find any witnesses or suspects.
