A Temple Hills man has been arrested on charges of raping a 13-year-old Annapolis girl more than a year ago, police said.
Dwight Carter, 26, of the 2000 block of Kenton Place, is accused of raping the girl in an Annapolis apartment where both were staying.
The girl told police she was spending the night at a friend?s on Jan. 13, 2007, and couldn?t sleep because Carter, the friend?s stepbrother, had been playing music too loudly, police said.
After the victim asked Carter to turn the music down, police said, he raped her.
Carter was arrested just before midnight Saturday by Prince George?s County police, who were investigating a report of an armed man in the 2000 block of Indian Head Highway in Oxon Hill, according to charging documents.
The girl told police Carter grabbed her by the arm, put a pillow over her head and raped her. He let her go after about 10 minutes, according to charging documents.
Carter was among several people questioned by Prince George?s County officers, who learned that he had a warrant out for his arrest after running his name through a database, said Hal Dalton, Annapolis police spokesman.
“He happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Dalton said.
“We?ve been looking for him since some time in late January of last year. The girl didn?t report it right away, and by the time we corroborated everything, he had run away.”
Carter had warned the girl not to tell anyone, but on May 21, 2007, she wrote a letter to her parents telling them what happened, according to charging documents. She identified Carter in a photo lineup in July, police said.
Carter faces up to life in prison for charges of first-degree rape and assault, as well as false imprisonment.
