Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell’s plan to spend the $1.45 billion in unspent funding found during an audit of the state Department of Transportation is not new money, the Northern Virginia Transportation Alliance argues.
In an e-mail blast, the transportation group repeats the message “It’s Not New Money” four times in crescendoing size before listing an outline of the action plan and additional VDOT reforms.
“Accelerating the expenditure of these one-time funds and taking steps to improve future money management practices is commendable,” the e-mail reads.
However, for perspective, the e-mail adds, the money is less than half the $3 billion cut from VDOT’s Six-Year Improvement Program between June 2007 and 2009.
