Cleaning lady sentenced for pilfering checks from D.C. offices

A member of a cleaning staff was sentenced to three months in jail for stealing more than $30,000 in checks from the D.C. Office of the Chief Financial Officer.

Yesenia E. Amaya, 20, of Hyattasville, was employed by a building services company and worked the evening shift cleaning the offices of the Economic Development and Regulation Center in Southwest Washington.

Between July 2010 and November 2010, she took about 30 checks worth$31,211 from an office, added her name as a payee and took the checks to Maryland where she deposited them into her own account, prosecutors said.
