Sessions: Trump won’t have to fund own campaign

Donald Trump supporter Sen. Jeff Sessions is optimistic about the Republican Party getting behind the presumptive nominee.

Sessions doesn’t believe Trump will have to fund his own campaign, he told Fox News Sunday’s Chris Wallace.

“I think we are going to get unity,” the Alabama Republican told Wallace on Sunday. The senator explained that Trump has called GOP Majority Leader Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky on the phone and many others and it’s being worked out.

Trump told a rally in Las Vegas Saturday that he would fund his own campaign if the party doesn’t get behind him. He said he will continue to raise money for the GOP despite their indecisiveness about supporting him.

But Sessions, despite his optimism, also expressed frustration with his GOP colleagues. “They need to understand that the American people are not happy with gridlock,” he said.

With Trump battling GOP leaders, Sessions thinks Trump’s “tone can improve over time.”

“I would just say … the issues is what will work for Donald Trump.”
