‘Sleeping on the couch tonight’: Republican counsel cracks joke about wife during impeachment testimony

Stephen Castor, a lawyer for House Republicans, joked about his wife while testifying in front of the House Judiciary Committee regarding previous impeachment hearings.

“I want to thank you all for your presentations. Mr. Castor, I believe you have been talking for approximately 75 minutes today. I want to thank you for that,” Ashley Hurt Callen, the Republican counsel for Monday’s hearing, told Castor, who was a witness.

“My wife thanks you as well. She likes when I talk when she’s not around,” he replied.

Castor’s quip brought swift ridicule online from those who called the comment “crazy” and “grating.” One Twitter user even remarked that the lawyer would likely be “sleeping on the couch tonight” after he “ripped his wife on national television.”

The most recent hearing follows House Democrats’ decision to draft articles of impeachment. The Judiciary Committee is holding testimony to determine what will be included in the articles. If the House votes to impeach President Trump, the Senate, which is currently controlled by Republicans, would need to vote with a two-thirds majority to remove the president from office.
