Chelsea Clinton wrote a feminist book for your kids

Chelsea Clinton has written a children’s picture book, with a headline inspired by Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., about important women through history who overcame adversity.

The book by the daughter of former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will feature the titled “She Persisted.”

This is likely a reference to when Warren was shut out of a Senate floor debate last month over then-Attorney General nominee Jeff Sessions when reading a letter from Coretta Scott King. Afterward, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell defended the decision to silence Warren, saying she appeared to violate a rule by impugning another senator, Sessions, who was still an Alabama senator at the time.

“She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted,” he said. Afterward, the hashtag #ShePersisted became a trending topic on Twitter as supporters of Warren took to social media to complain about the move.

The book, which will be on sale May 30, will dive into the history of 13 women, including Harriet Tubman, Sally Ride, Oprah Winfrey and Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. There will also be a “cameo” by another important female figure, according to an Entertainment Weekly report Thursday.

“I wrote this book for everyone who’s ever wanted to speak up but has been told to quiet down, for everyone who’s ever been made to feel less than,” said Clinton in a statement. “The 13 women in ‘She Persisted’ all overcame adversity to help shape our country — sometimes through speaking out, sometimes by staying seated, sometimes by captivating an audience. With this book, I want to send a message to young readers around the country — and the world — that persistence is power.”

There has been a swirl of speculation lately that Chelsea Clinton could be planning a political run of her own after her mother failed to win the presidential election last November. Several analyses have pointed to her Twitter account, which has recently stepped up its sharp rebukes of President Trump and other Republicans. She denied that she is eyeing a run for New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand’s seat in 2020.
