More than half say Trump should ‘have to’ testify before Jan. 6 committee: Poll

New polling data indicate that 60% believe former President Donald Trump should be forced to testify before the Jan. 6 committee investigating the Capitol riot.

The Wednesday Monmouth University poll included 808 adults aged 18 or older and has a 5.2-percentage-point margin of error at the 95% confidence level.

Majorities of both Democratic-identifying respondents (89%) and independents (61%) said that Trump should “have to” testify. Less than one-third of Republicans (28%) agreed.

Only about one-third (34%) of people said that the former president should not be made to testify. More than half of Republican respondents (67%) believe that Trump should not be forced to testify before the committee.

Across the board, people believe that if Trump does testify, it should be during a public hearing. Seventy-seven percent of Americans responded as such, including 65% of Republicans and more than 80% of both Democrats and independents.

The newly released polling data were conducted between Oct. 13 and 17. Notably, the most recent public hearing from the Jan. 6 committee was held on Oct. 13.

During the hearing, the committee unanimously voted in favor of subpoenaing the former president. “He tried to take away the voice of the American people in choosing their president and replace the will of the voters with his will to remain in power. He is the one person at the center of the story of what happened on Jan. 6, so we want to hear from him,” said Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-MS).
