National security adviser interviews set for Sunday

President Trump will speak with at least four candidates to serve as his next national security adviser on Sunday, including a new name on the shortlist: West Point superintendent Lt. Gen. Robert Caslen.

Trump currently has meetings scheduled with retired Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg, who has been acting as the national security adviser since Mike Flynn resigned Monday, as well as Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster, former United Nations ambassador John Bolton and now Caslen, according to a press pool report.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer told reporters at Mar-a-Lago in Florida that there could be “potentially more” meetings. It’s unclear whether the conversations scheduled for Sunday will all be in-person or if some could be over the phone.

Former CIA director David Petraeus is no longer in the running for the adviser position, Spicer said. He also could not say whether former Army Chief of Staff Gen. Ray Odierno was still on the short list.

Trump offered the job this week to retired Vice Adm. Bob Harward, a former Navy SEAL, who turned it down.

Editor’s note: This article has been updated to fix Robert Caslen’s military rank.
