House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy called for Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to apologize at a press conference Wednesday after she compared migrant detention centers to concentration camps.
Ocasio-Cortez made the comparison in an Instagram live video Monday night, saying, “The United States is running concentration camps on our southern border, and that is exactly what they are. They are concentration camps.”
.@GOPLeader “I think Congresswoman @AOC needs to apologize, not only to the nation but to the world. She does not understand history. She does not understand what’s going on at the border at the same time. But there is no comparison & to actually say that is really embarrassing.” pic.twitter.com/Z8Sr9xzjM3

Ocasio-Cortez’s statement has since received significant backlash. Both the Auschwitz memorial and Yad Vashem, the Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem, weighed in on the debacle.
.@AOC Concentration camps assured a slave labor supply to help in the Nazi war effort, even as the brutality of life inside the camps helped assure the ultimate goal of “extermination through labor.”
