Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham and the other Republican members of the committee introduced a resolution this week commending Customs and Border Protection, or CBP, employees for their service to the country.
“I’m proud to introduce this resolution. To the Border Patrol agents, you’re doing an incredible job,” Graham, a Republican from South Carolina, said in a press release. “This system is broken. It’s not a crisis, it’s a disaster. Congress has a duty to act.”
The resolution lauds the men and women of CBP for “their continued honorable service” to fixing the immigration crisis at the border. The resolution also urges Congress to pass legislation to decrease the influx of migrants at the southern border.
Republican Sen. Ben Sasse of Nebraska said that “border security is national security.”
“These officers are working to stop human traffickers and drug smugglers,” he added. “I’m grateful for their bravery and integrity.”
The resolution comes as a record-high number of Americans believe that immigration is the biggest problem facing the country.
A recent survey found that 27% think that immigration is the “most important problem” afflicting the U.S., edging out the 23% who cite government and poor leadership as the most pressing issue. President Trump has pushed the issue to the forefront of his upcoming 2020 presidential campaign.
