The names of two Fairfax County police officers slain in a shootout last year outside the Sully District station were engraved Tuesday at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.
In a morning ceremony, Detective Vicky Armel and Master Police Officer Michael Garbarino were added to a wall at the District-based memorial alongside the name of a U.S. Air Force special agent killed in Iraq last year.
The event comes less then a year after the unprecedented violence of May 8, when a heavily armed Michael Kennedy stormed the parking lot of the western Fairfax County police station. Kennedy first opened fire on Garbarino, who sat in his cruiser at the time. Armel stepped out of the station and fired on Kennedy, but perished in the gunfight.
Officers later fatally shot the 18-year-old gunman. Garbarino died just over a week later.
A separate memorial ceremony is planned for May 10 outside the county’s Massey building on Chain Bridge Road in Fairfax, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.
