President Trump pledged Friday that the U.S. will be looking to boost bilateral trade with Britain once it leaves the European Union.
“You know all of the situation with respect to Brexit and the complexity and the problems. But we have a very good trading relationship with the U.K., and that has just been strengthened further,” Trump said at a White House address Friday. “So with the U.K., we are continuing our trade. We are going to actually be increasing it very substantially as time goes by.”
British Parliament is still divided over plans to leave the EU, known as Brexit. The UK voted to leave the EU in June 2016, just a few months before Trump was elected president. Many saw the Brexit vote as a revolt against the establishment, and as a precursor to Trump’s election victory later that fall.
Trump addressed the nation Friday to announce that he would be signing a declaration of a national emergency to fund a border wall at the U.S.-Mexico border. Trump said he’s pushing for $8 billion to build hundreds of miles of steel fencing at the border to deal with what he says is an immigration crisis.
