Michael Cohen ‘admitting to lying’ to House Intelligence Committee, Democrat says

A vocal Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee accused Michael Cohen on Thursday of lying to the panel when testifying about the infamous June 2016 Trump Tower meeting.

“Michael Cohen is admitting to lying to the House Intelligence Committee during his #RussiaInvestigation testimony,” Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., wrote on Twitter. “All the more reason to unearth an investigation the @HouseGOP buried and find the truth. Any GOP Member want to do more than say they’re ‘disappointed?'”

Swalwell also shared a news article about Cohen’s attorney Lanny Davis telling CNN his client “was present” during a discussion between President Trump and his son, Donald Trump Jr., purportedly about the meeting between campaign officials and a Kremlin-linked lawyer.

The meeting, which came to light in press reports last summer, has caused problems for the president amid special counsel Robert Mueller’s federal Russia investigation because it was set up with the promise that it would yield political dirt on opponent Hillary Clinton.

CNN reported in July that Cohen was prepared to make statements to Mueller about President Trump’s prior knowledge of the meeting, adding that the president consented to it taking place. President Trump has denied Cohen’s alleged claims.

Cohen’s accusations, however, could lead to further scrutiny of his relationship with the Trumps after the Senate Intelligence Committee announced Tuesday it had “re-engaged” him over concerns he had mislead lawmakers by telling them he had been unaware of the meeting.

Swalwell’s tweet Thursday raises the prospect of Cohen being hauled before the House Intelligence panel again and calls on the GOP majority to resurrect the committee’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election that Democrats claim ended prematurely.
