Meanwhile, in the Falkland Islands…

The Falkland Islands seem to be popping up in the news a lot in the last month. There was the recent death of Sir Rex Hunt—the governor of the territory during the Argentine invasion—and his obituary must be read to be believed. It’s like something straight out of an Evelyn Waugh novel.

The tiny islands also remain a geopolitical flashpoint. Earlier this week, Britain called on the United Nations to pressure Argentina after left-wing nationalists “smashed plate glass windows, scrawled graffiti, hurled paintballs and turned over dustbins during the attack on the offices of Argentine Shipping Services” in an attempt to keep cruise ships from docking in the Falklands. Argentine nationalists are also upset that the Falkland Islands plan to hold a referendum in the spring, in order to assert their sovereignty and send a message to Argentina that they want to remain a U.K. territory.
