A vulnerable Republican senator is bucking his party and applauding a decision by the Supreme Court to strike down a Texas abortion law.
Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Ill., said on Twitter Monday that he was glad to see the Supreme Court “uphold access to health care for women.” The court ruled 5-3 that the Texas law that placed new requirements on abortion clinics and doctors restricted access to abortions for women.

Other Republicans derided the ruling. Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., said in a statement that the court caved to the “demands of abortion extremists who seek to normalize the ending of an innocent human life.”
Kirk is in a tight re-election race. Last week he put out a campaign ad that touted his independence from the Republican Party, including his pro-choice positions, call for a vote on Supreme Court Justice nominee Merrick Garland and refusal to endorse Donald Trump.
