A Glen Burnie woman was killed in a car collision when she apparently lost control of her car on Crain Highway, drove into oncoming traffic and was struck head-on by a sport utility vehicle, Anne Arundel police said Tuesday.
Brenda Jean Johnson, 53, of Main Avenue, was pronounced dead at 9:04 p.m. Monday at Baltimore Washington Medical Center, police said.
The crash occurred about 8:38 p.m. when she lost control of her 2002 Nissan Maxima going around a curve on northbound Crain Highway near Ritchie Highway, police said.
Johnson struck the curb and traveled into the southbound lane of the road where a 2003 Lincoln Navigator struck her Nissan.
The Lincoln driver, Cherolynn Blackwell, 43, of Autumn Crest Court in Odenton, suffered minor injuries, police said.
Blackwell was transporting two children, Joseph Blackwell, 15, and Jessica Blackwell, 9, who also had minor injuries, police said.
Speed was not a factor in this crash, police said, and Johnson did not appear to be wearing a seat belt.
Johnson was the sixth person killed in about a month in car collisions in Anne Arundel.
Police said they began “aggressively monitoring and enforcing” traffic violations this month at 10 intersectionswhere 20 percent of accidents have occurred. The operation, which monitors part of Crain Highway, will run through Sept. 30 and aims to reduce traffic accidents.
Police also have joined with the State Highway Administration for the 2008 Click it or Ticket Campaign, which began May 1 and emphasizes enforcement during nighttime hours, when drivers and occupants are less likely to wear seat belts, police said.
Preliminary investigations in Maryland during 2007 indicate that 52 percent of drivers killed in motor vehicle crashes at night were not wearing seat belts.
