Donald Trump said his judicial appointees would “automatically” reverse the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision on abortion rights, during Wednesday night’s presidential debate.
Trump first answered that the decision would be resolved by the states in a potential Trump administration. When pressed, Trump went a step further.
“Do you want to see the court overturn, you just said you want to see the court protect the Second Amendment, do you want to see the court overturn Roe v. Wade?” asked debate moderator Chris Wallace of Fox News.
“Well, if we put another two or perhaps three justices on that’s really what’s going to be that will happen,” Trump answered. “And that’ll happen automatically, in my opinion, because I am putting pro-life justices on the court.”
Trump then said again that this means the issue would go back to the states, which would make a determination on the contentious issue, which is likely to be an animating issue for both parties’ base voters.
